Organic Cotton

What does organic cotton mean?

What does organic cotton mean?

Cotton has faced competition from numerous natural fibers as a raw material due to the organic movement, but it still holds the edge among both producers and consumers due to its outstanding properties. Skin-friendly, soft, breathable, easy to wash, and extremely durable—few textiles can match this range of properties. That's precisely whyCottonalso in the currently taking placeFashion revolution towards sustainabilityfor our planet, but in organic quality. Specifically, organic cotton signals a conscious commitment to environmental responsibility through its cultivation based on ecological and sustainable agriculture. For example, organic cotton cultivation prevents the depletion of cultivated land. According to KbA certification, synthetic and chemical fertilizers may not be used for at least three years, and the seeds may not be genetically modified. Instead, farmers are required to use certain insect species as natural enemies, thus counteracting potential pests, especially compared to conventional cotton.

Pure organic cotton is environmentally friendly

Pure organic cotton is environmentally friendly

Organic cotton belongs to the family of environmentally friendly natural fibers. Choosing organic cotton supports farmers who have not used synthetic or chemical fertilizers on their fields for at least three years and rely on the power of nature in the form of certain insect species instead of harmful pesticides.

In addition, a certain crop rotation must be observed. In practice, this means that organic cotton may only be grown on the same field every three years to prevent one-sided use and the resulting nutrient loss. In addition to higher-quality organic cotton, this also offers the advantage that farmers are not dependent on one raw material alone, but can plant other organic products in between, which ensure their own food supply and can also be resold. Thus, the cultivation of organic cotton, controlled by KbA certification, guarantees a conscious commitment to the environment and local farmers by focusing on ecological and sustainable agriculture.

Cotton textiles - How does it work?

Cotton textiles - How does it work?

Cotton was cultivated on several continents over 6,000 years ago. There are over 50 natural varieties of cotton. Conventional cotton cultivation requires up to 100 grams of chemicals per T-shirt in production. As a result, 77 million workers are poisoned each year and suffer from infertility, miscarriages, and many other illnesses. During heavy rains, large quantities of pesticides often enter rivers, lakes, and the ocean, harming both living creatures and the natural environment.

Organic cotton is based on natural fertilization methods, innovative and natural strategies for weed control, pest control, defoliation, and harvest preparation. Up to 80% of the water used comes from monsoon rains. This protects nature and people from environmentally harmful and toxic substances. This helps avoid negative external costs for society and the environment. In 2018, only 0.7% of global cotton production was organic. Although organic cotton currently accounts for only a small share of total cotton consumption, it will continue to grow strongly in the future.

Certificates for organic cotton

Certificates for organic cotton

GREEN SHIRTS has the vision to establish environmental protection and ethics in the textile industry so that sustainable clothing is made with materials such asOrganic cotton and ecological production become the standardTo ensure customer security in times of the "eco-label" flood, we conduct extensive research and only use certificates that meet our highest standards. Because, as is often the case, the reality is that not everything that says "organic cotton" actually contains organic cotton. Certificates such as "Green Cotton"," "made from untreated cotton," or "hand-picked" alone mean very little. They are often used to deceive consumers into believing in a perfect world that doesn't actually exist. But that doesn't correspond to our vision of the future of the textile industry, which we want to help shape through active participation in the organic segment. We rely on the seals of the "FairWair Foundation," the "Oeko-Tex Standard 100," the "Environmental Justice Foundation," the "Soil Association Organic Standard," the "Carbon Reduction Label," and the "International Labour Organization."

Organic cotton relies on low water consumption

Organic cotton relies on low water consumption

Organic cotton requires significantly less water than conventionally produced cotton. The reason for this lies in the fundamental principle of natural, environmentally friendly agriculture. Humus is generally a natural plant fertilizer because it safely stores nutrients in the soil. Conventional cotton cultivation on plantations that do not adhere to crop rotation produces much thinner humus layers, to which chemical fertilizers and pesticides must be artificially added. When growing organic cotton, a thick humus layer is a prerequisite for a successful harvest. This allows water to be stored better, which significantly reduces water consumption in organic cotton cultivation. At GREEN SHIRTS, we have paid particular attention to water consumption and have therefore chosen organic cotton from certified farms in India that obtain 90 percent of their water from monsoon rains. This virtually eliminates the need for artificial irrigation, a benefit for both people and nature.

Background information on organic cotton

Why is organic cotton usually more expensive?

The production of organic cotton also takes a financial toll. Organic cotton is, on average, between twenty and forty percent more expensive than conventionally produced cotton, which is designed solely to maximize profit without regard for nature or farmers. However, the higher price not only settles the outstanding debt with the environment and local producers but also manifests itself in a higher quality finish and finer material quality. Because no defoliants are allowed in the production of organic cotton, the organic blossomsare not harvested by machine but piece by piece by hand. This not only means a much longer time requirement but also a quality control that begins directly at the plant. When organic cotton is harvested by hand, spoiled fibers, capsule, and leaf pieces are excluded and not harvested along with the rest, as is common in industrial production. The result is evident both structurally and in the touch test. Cotton from organic production presents itself as soft and supple, with an extra portion of good conscience.

The Prospects of Organic Cotton

Organic cotton has fought hard to earn its place in the fashion world and has finally reached a point where marketing agencies and corporations are beginning to show interest. In short: organic cotton has entered mainstream consciousness and society. Whattwenty years ago – at the beginning of the organic cotton movement– seemed like a pipe dream, is now gradually becoming a living reality. Environmentally sustainable organic cotton cultivation has proven that fair fashion production is possible. Given the increasingly precarious situation on our planet, more and more people are realizing that it is in their own interest to pay attention to the origin, quality, and production methods when purchasing new clothes. Together, customers in a global market economy can initiate change; together, conscious purchasing behavior can strengthen environmentally sustainable businesses, which also empowers local farmers. Together, we can shape a liveable future, a goal that is increasingly within reach.
